PROGRAM “STREET WORK”
INTEGRAL ATTENTION AND PREVENTION
JOB TRAINING

PROGRAM WORKING WITH THE POPULATION LIVING IN THE STREETS

The problems:

Violation of their rights, drug abuse, everyday violence, begging, adjustment to life on the streets, sense of loss for past life, addictions, dependency, crimes of, sexual violence, prostitution, varying health problems etc.

Objective:

To promote a process of re-structuring and personalization in children, teenagers, young people and families living in street situations in the city of Cochabamba and Quillacollo. Through a motivational and personalised accompaniment from the two projects, we have the target to bring fundamental changes in their lifestyle, strengthening their capacities, skills and abilities and helping them to recover meaning in their lives.

Coyera

We focus on the situation under the people in the streets live, by offering them different types of activities. Thru these activities we aim at wakening a want to change within the beneficiaries. We can, thereafter, work with this want to change and intent to deepen it until the person itself is convinced to take the decision to leave the streets.

Project Coyera:

This project is the first stage in working with groups who live on the streets. We have a multidisciplinary team working on the streets, using varying motivational strategies, and providing support and guidance on many different themes (health, psychology, social work, spirituality, art, education and work)

We help them become aware of their rights and obligations in the society and raise awareness about basic habits among them. We also offer health support, accompanying to hospitals and health centres, help with the processing of official documents (for example to obtain an identity card or birth certificate), to contact relatives or other people who could be important in the process of changing their way of life, coordination for inter-institutional work to find places in shelters or other reception centres for children and youth or to carry out joint activities.

During the whole process of the work with groups and individuals, we motivate the children and youngsters to reflect on their personal situation and situation on the streets. By doing this we encourage them to see alternatives to their way of life, to rediscover the meaning of their life and thereby, little by little, helping them to regain their self-confidence. All this while taking into consideration that each person is different, as will be the process of change. Under the philosophy that we support (Christian existentialism) we believe in every human being’s resilience and ability to change.

Proyecto Winana:

Social insertion/ reinsertion:

The second stage of the Street work, where we work with the part of the beneficiaries who have left the streets to start and thereby initiated a process of change in their life. In some of the cases the decision of change can be clear and definite, while in other cases ambivalent. There are mainly 2 distinct groups: those who recently have left the streets and those who already have a process within the project and therefore are moving towards more independence.

The work in the streets (COYERA) finally generates persons who decide to leave the streets (couples, single persons and children, youth etc.) in order to initiate a process of change. As there are very few rehabilitation centres or reception centres in Cochabamba, the ones for whom a centre not is an option have to make their change in a more independent way. This “independent way” means, in practice, that they have to rent a room to live in during the process. In this case we do not just leave them to cope by themselves, but accompany them thru their process of change (WIÑANA).

PROGRAM “INTEGRAL ATTENTION AND PREVENTION”

This programme is aimed at carrying out preventive work with children and adolescents, who work inside or outside their homes or who come from dysfunctional families with high levels of violence.

The problems:

Violation of their rights, violence in the family, the parents' alcohol consumption, child and youth labour, delayed development at different areas (such as the motoric-, social- and emotional development), health problems etc.

Objective:

To, thru a multidisciplinary work, promote an educational process (that also focuses on personality development), with children, youth, young adults and families that finds themselves in a high risk situation due to their economical-, family-, social- and personal situation. With these processes we aim support the beneficiaries to develop their abilities, skills and potentials. This program aims to promote habits and behavior among the children, youth and young adults that enables them to become active protagonists of their own lives in the present, as well as in the future.

Project FENIX:

Fenix is a centre for children and adolescents (NNATs) who come from dysfunctional families and which are confronted every day with different problems. The project offers a space of personal growth to these children and teenagers, a place for them to make a meaningful project out of their life. Here they can study, form and inform themselves, develop different activities and here they can find people who listen to them and can orientate them. The project gives them the possibility for themselves to become the organizers of their own growth, structuring and personalization. With the target group, we engage in different activities within the different areas of intervention: formative and preventive activities, psychological support, nutrition, health, labour capacitation and orientation, coordination with the family and promotion of the rights of the target group.

Why the name Fénix?

The name “Fénix” refers to the attitude of moving forward, despite the limitations, problems and daily difficulties. Every child with parents, who either live on the street or have problems with drugs, has to overcome difficulties. This is symbolized by the Phoenix, which rises from its ashes. This rise from the ashes is particularly symbolic when you consider the harsh reality for children and youngsters in the project.

Job training program

This program aims to develop work habits in the beneficiary population, who in many cases have not completed primary or secondary education, so they have many difficulties when looking for employment; So that this program also sees the possibility of implementing small productive projects where they can work and eventually that they can start their own enterprises.

Coyera

The aim is to train adolescents and young people who assist the foundation's projects in economic activities that can be profitable for themselves and their families and thus become self-sufficient, as well as to guide them in their search for work and prepare them to enter the labour field, in coordination with other specialized institutions.
